We’re Taking Action to Elect Climate Champions

The stakes could not be higher in this year’s elections. With the climate crisis accelerating at alarming rates, we’re in a race against time to meet the critical international goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. At this same moment, America is at risk from politicians who are not committed to basic democratic principles. The choices we make at the ballot box could determine the future of our nation and our planet.

That’s why we are endorsing candidates who will protect our climate and democracy.

CCAN Action Fund Endorsements

  • Vice President Kamala Harris to be the next President of the United States
  • Governor Tim Walz (MN) to be the next Vice President of the United States
  • Angela Alsobrooks, County Executive for Prince George’s County, to be the new United States Senator from Maryland

All of these candidates have advocated for strong climate action throughout their careers, and promise to continue doing so if elected. We will fight for them now so they can fight for our future.

Here Are Ways YOU Can Get Involved

Volunteer with CCAN Action Fund to contact voters and get climate champions elected!  Sign up now to:

  • Phonebank for Harris on Election Day:  Join people from across the country on Zoom to make calls to voters for Harris in swing states, with a major focus on Pennsylvania. Our organizers will set you up and train you to make calls.
  • Help Triple Votes on Election Day in Philly. Vote-tripling is a Get Out The Vote tactic first developed in 2018 and it’s proven to be an effective way to increase voter turnout. On Election Day (Nov. 5), volunteers will stand at voting locations and ask voters to text three friends to remind to vote before polls close. — Sorry! FREE housing from CCAN Action Fund is now FULL. —
  • Contact Everyone You Know in Pennsylvania! Make Sure They Vote for Harris: Make a list of everyone you know in PA. It’s a big state. You probably know someone there. If you think they’ll vote for Harris, then text them, call them, email them to make sure they have a plan to vote. Encourage them using whatever arguments you’re most passionate about. If someone is undecided, do all you can to persuade them! If anyone is unsure about how to vote or wants to check the status of their mail-in ballot, send them to vote.pa.gov

Kamala Harris: Proven Climate Leadership

  • As San Francisco’s district attorney, Harris created the office’s first environmental justice unit.
  • As California’s attorney general, she fought against fossil fuel projects and opened an investigation of Exxon Mobil into whether the company misled the public on climate change.
  • During her time as a U.S. senator, she co-introduced legislation on environmental justice and supported the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s goal of shutting down the Dakota Access Pipeline.
  • As vice president, Harris cast the tie-breaking vote in favor of the groundbreaking Inflation Reduction Act, which authorized historic investments in climate action that she will to protect and implement as president.

The Biden/Harris Administration has done more to fight climate change than any other U.S. administration including: tightening Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations with a goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions; spurring the growth of clean energy manufacturing and clean energy jobs; directing every federal agency to work toward “environmental justice for all”; protecting public lands and waters, restoring U.S. climate leadership on the international stage; and much more. We agree with President Joe Biden that Harris is the best candidate to save our climate and our democracy.

Angela Alsobrooks: A New Climate Leader for MD

CCAN Action Fund endorsed Angela Alsobrooks as the best pick to represent Maryland in the United States Senate because she supports climate policies that will:

•  Reduce carbon emission levels by half before 2030

•  Expand clean energy tax credits

•  Hold fossil fuel companies accountable through Senator Chris Van Hollen’s (D-MD) Polluters Pay Climate Fund Act

As a lifelong Marylander, Alsobrooks understands the urgent challenges that are facing communities across our state.
CCAN Action Fund’s endorsement of Alsobrooks exemplifies our commitment to supporting candidates who can best represent those diverse communities.

Fighting Against Project 2025

This year’s election will be pivotal for climate progress in America and around the world. We have the opportunity to accelerate the clean energy transition, but we also risk losing all the progress we’ve made. And we know that fossil fuel companies will pour millions and millions of dollars into this election to prevent climate champions from taking office.

This became even clearer with the Heritage Foundation’s release of their infamous Project 2025 plan — written mostly by former Trump Administration staffers — that would repeal Obamacare, privatize Social Security, and declare all-out war on the climate.

This radical 900-page plan would:

  • Gut the EPA
  • Rubber stamp all fossil-fuel drilling permits
  • Discontinue incentives for EVs and clean energy
  • Dissolve the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration because it “has become one of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry.”

Project 2025 seeks to undercut or reverse climate progress on all fronts

Make no mistake – despite Donald Trump’s efforts to distance himself from this plan – Project 2025 lays out exactly what he would do in a second term. “Drill baby drill” is his most frequent and filthiest slogan. Indeed, an analysis by the UK-based group Carbon Brief found that a Trump presidency would lead to 400 billion metric tons of additional emissions in the US by 2030. That’s the emissions output of the European Union and Japan combined

The only thing that can beat the power of money in politics is the power of people in politics. With so much at stake, we are going to do everything in our power to elect climate champions and defeat the climate deniers who wrote Project 2025, and it’s going to take all of us working together to do it.

The polls show that these races are neck and neck, which is why we all need to help Harris-Walz and Alsobrooks win in November. Just a few thousand votes in a key state can determine who controls the White House or the U.S. Senate.

That’s why we have a plan to mobilize thousands of voters in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and beyond to show up and vote for a safer climate and a more secure democracy. For Biden’s 2020 campaign, our victory at the national level was made possible by a small number of electoral victories with very small margins in a few key states. The margins this fall could be just as thin so our work together could make all the difference.
