Radical Project 2025's "Fat Cat" Policy Proposals Are Rejected By Virginians in Hampton Roads

CCAN Action Fund joins Virginians in Hampton Roads to call on Congressional leaders to oppose Project 2025 and protect climate progress

Virginia Beach, VA – Residents of Virginia’s second congressional district held a Virginians Against Project 2025 press conference on Thursday, October 17 to showcase their opposition to the Project’s radical, regressive agenda. The event was organized by Chesapeake Climate Action Network Action Fund (CCAN Action Fund), House Accountability War Room, and Affordable Virginia. Speakers, including CCAN Action Fund’s Hampton Roads organizer Leianis Gunn, emphasized that Project 2025 seeks to protect wealthy corporate entities at the expense of everyday Virginians. In other words, as the event slogan said, “Fat Cats win, families lose.” (See photos.)

One of the many radical goals of Project 2025’s is to undo recent climate policy gains that are protecting communities from carbon pollution and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Donald Trump and Republicans like Representative Jen Kiggans have tried to distance themselves from Project 2025 but at least 28 of its 38 authors served in the Trump administration and over 100 conservative groups helped develop the project’s controversial proposals for restructuring the federal government. Many Virginians still don’t know what it actually says so we are shedding light on this un-American policy proposal.

CCAN Action Fund supports Missy Cotter Smasal, candidate for Virginia’s second congressional district, because she’s a leader willing to stand up against the radical policies in Project 2025.

Leianis Gunn, CCAN’s Hampton Roads Organizer and VA-02 resident, said in the following statement:

“Make no mistake – this project is not just about energy independence or economic growth. It is a handout to fossil fuel companies at the expense of people like us. It’s a plan designed to enrich corporations that are already driving the climate crisis, all while stripping communities, like ours, of the protections that we rely on. This is not the future we want for Hampton Roads. We need leaders who will stand up for our environment and for our communities, not sell them out to the highest bidder. Congress must reject the dangerous proposals set out in Project 2025. Our future depends on it, and we, as citizens, must hold our representatives accountable. We must demand that they prioritize the wellbeing of the people and our planet over corporate profits.”
