Trump Budget Would Slash Vital Research, Undercutting America’s Ability to Deal with Growing Climate Crisis, Says CCAN AF

Leading climate group strongly condemns the anti-science budget proposal that will leave communities vulnerable to climate disasters and increased costs

Washington, D.C. — President Trump released a budget proposal today that threatens to erode the nation’s ability to respond to escalating climate change impacts, according to the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) Action Fund. Trump’s anti-science budget would cut federal climate research to zero, threatening essential programs at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that help forecast extreme weather, track ocean acidification, and develop future tools to lower the risks of climate change. Without these investments, policymakers, businesses, and local governments will be left without the tools they need to protect communities and reduce long-term costs.

“This proposed budget is exactly what America does NOT need when facing rising energy bills, more frequent extreme weather, and rising insurance rates,” said Quentin Scott, Federal Policy Director for CCAN Action Fund. “By gutting funds for climate science and innovation, the budget jeopardizes our ability to understand and respond to the accelerating climate crisis. Defunding climate research at NOAA doesn’t make the problem go away  —  it makes those hazards more dangerous and more expensive. Families across the country are already paying the price through higher utility bills, flooding, and storm damage. This budget would only make those burdens worse.”

CCAN Action Fund urges the U.S. Congress to reject Trump’s budget that sacrifices science and affordability. Instead, lawmakers should prioritize investments that safeguard communities from climate impacts and put us on a path to a more sustainable future.
