Hampton Roads Artwork Submerged to Spotlight Rising Sea Levels and How the Inflation Reduction Act Will Help Head Off Disaster

In a creative and unique demonstration, Virginians thanked Congresswoman Luria for passing the Inflation Reduction Act, which will help Hampton Roads by addressing sea-level rise, reducing pollution, improving public health, creating jobs, and lowering energy costs.

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA
On Thursday October 27, Hampton Roads residents submerged iconic images of coastal Virginia into the ocean to call attention to the threat of sea-level rise. Sea-level rise could cost Virginia’s second Congressional district more than $10 billion by 2040. The Inflation Reduction Act, which was recently signed into law, will help slow sea-level rise and build the infrastructure that Virginia needs to adapt to rising tides.

Demonstrators, who included Hampton University students, local artists, business owners, faith leaders, public health advocates, and climate advocates, thanked Congresswoman Luria for her critical role in helping to pass the Inflation Reduction Act. This landmark legislation will reduce energy costs for families by $1,000 a year, lower insulin costs, and cut climate pollution 40% by 2030. By simultaneously lowering energy costs and slashing emissions causing rising tides, Congresswoman Luria has helped secure a win-win for the region.

“We thank Congresswoman Luria for protecting the literal foundation of Hampton Roads, saving families $1,000 or more a year on their energy bills while addressing the threat of sea-level rise,” said Charles Brown II, the Hampton Roads Organizer for CCAN Action Fund. “By passing the Inflation Reduction Act, Congresswoman Luria has helped lower energy costs, cut pollution in the air, create more than 200,000 jobs in Virginia, and reduce inflation.”

Addison Hunter, Communications Director for Freedom Virginia said, “Representative Elaine Luria has worked tirelessly to lower healthcare costs for Americans. Every journey begins somewhere, and through the Inflation Reduction Act and Representative Luria’s decisive action, we have begun the move towards a more affordable healthcare system.”

From cutting climate pollution to expanding access to affordable healthcare, Congresswoman Luria has been fighting for Virginia. At a time when inaction could cause high tide to lap against the steps of Norfolk City Hall and curable diseases to go untreated, Luria has delivered victories. For the Hampton Roads region to survive and thrive for generations to come, residents need leaders who will defend their future, leaders like Congresswoman Luria.
